FOR PHD STUDENTS

THE REGULATIONS OF PULS DOCTORAL SCHOOL

THE APPOINTMENT OF SUPERVISOR

Within 3 months since the date of the commencement of studies at the School the Committee of the respective discipline appoints the dissertation supervisor(-s), or the dissertation supervisor and the auxiliary supervisor, on a motion by the PhD student submitted to the Director of the Doctoral School in the course of the recruitment procedure.

In justified cases at the motion of the PhD student submitted to the Director of the Doctoral School, the auxiliary supervisor may be appointed within 12 months since the the date of the commencement of studies at the School.

THE STUDY PROGRAMME

The study programme at the School is realised within the academic year from the 1st of October to the 30th of September.

The semester is an academic period to be passed at the School. The condition required of the PhD student to pass the semester is to fulfill all the obligations specified in the study programme and the individual research programme, and to receive a positive opinion of the scientific supervisor. The PhD student is required to submit a written report within the deadline specified by the Director of the Doctoral School.

The semester is credited based on the respective entry in the transcript of records at the Virtual Dean's Office [Wirtualny Dziekanat].

The study program at the School specifies:

  • obligatory and optional courses and internships/placements;
  • the schedule for the execution of tasks required to complete the PhD dissertation and specified in the individual research program;
  • the number of class periods in general courses required for all PhD students;
  • the number of class periods in courses specified in the framework program for a given discipline of science.

FRAMEWORK STUDY PROGRAMME

Classes will be held in 1-week modules.

I. 1st year (semesters 1 and 2)

1. General courses:
1) Pedagogics 12 h Examination
2) Global environmental problems 6 h Course credit
3) Methodology, organisation and financing of research 14 h Examination
4) Research tools (R package operation) 12 h Examination
5) Interdisciplinary seminar 16 h Course credit
6) Occupational health and safety instruction 4 h Course credit

Total 64 h/year and:

2. Teaching placement 60 h/year Course credit
3. Obligatory and optional classes within a respective discipline will be covered following the recommendations of scientific councils for respective disciplines, depending on the number of PhD students maximum load of 60 h/year

II. 2nd year (semesters 3 and 4)

1. General courses:
1) Scientific Writing 6 h Course credit
2) Global environmental problems 12 h Course credit
3) Research tools (Statistics) 14 h Examination
4) Research tools (Internet of Things) 4 h Course credit
5) Interdisciplinary seminar 12 h Course credit

Total 48 h/year and:

2. Teaching placement 60 h/year Course credit
3. Obligatory and optional classes within a respective discipline will be covered following the recommendations of scientific councils for respective disciplines, depending on the number of PhD students maximum load of 60 h/year

III. 3rd year (semesters 5 and 6)

1. General courses:
1) Research tools (Internet of Things) 8 h Course credit
2) Global environmental problems 8 h Examination
3) Interdisciplinary seminar 8 h Course credit

Total 24 h/year and:

2. Teaching placement 60 h/year Course credit
3. Obligatory and optional classes within a respective discipline will be covered following the recommendations of scientific councils for respective disciplines, depending on the number of PhD students maximum load of 60 h/year

IV. 4th year (semesters 7 and 8)

1. General courses:
1) Interdisciplinary seminar 24 h Course credit

Total 24 h/year and:

2. Teaching placement 60 h/year Course credit
3. Obligatory and optional classes within a respective discipline will be covered following the recommendations of scientific councils for respective disciplines, depending on the number of PhD students maximum load of 60 h/year

SCHEDULE

INDIVIDUAL RESEARCH PROGRAMME

An individual research programme is prepared by the PhD student in consultation with the dissertation supervisor or supervisors and presented to the Director of the Doctoral School within 12 months since the date of the commencement of studies at the School. In the case when an auxiliary supervisor is appointed, his/her opinion is also required.

The Director of the Doctoral School presents the individual research programme to the respective council of the scientific discipline to give their opinion.

Realization of the individual research programme is subject to mid-term evaluation taking place in the middle of the study period specified in the study program.

PHD STUDENT REPORTS

The semester is an academic period to be passed at the School.

MID-TERM EVALUATION

Realization of the individual research programme is subject to mid-term evaluation taking place in the middle of the study period specified in the study programme.

The date of the mid-term evaluation and the mid-term evaluation committee members, including the chairman, are appointed by the respective Committee of the Scientific Discipline.

The committee for the mid-term evaluation is composed of 3 members, of which minimum 1 member is a holder of the post-doctoral degree of [doktor habilitowany, comparable to DSc or Assistant Professor] or full professor in the discipline, in which the doctoral dissertation is being prepared, employed outside the entity running the School. The dissertation supervisor and the auxiliary supervisor may not be the committee members.

Not later than 30 days prior to the date of the mid-term evaluation PhD students present to the Committee of the respective discipline a report on the execution of the individual research programme approved by their scientific supervisor or supervisors, including:

  • information on the progress in the execution of research tasks related to the PhD dissertation,
  • information on the fulfillment of the schedule of tasks presented in the individual research programme.    
  • next this report is submitted to the mid-term evaluation committee. 

The template and format of this report are specified by the School Council.

The Committee conducting the mid-term evaluation confers with the PhD students, as well as the dissertation supervisor or dissertation supervisors on the report specified in point 6. The above-mentioned Committee decides on the mid-term evaluation, which is completed with the positive or negative note based on a majority vote. The result of the evaluation together with its justification is public.

The PhD student has the right to file an objection to a negative mid-term evaluation by appealing to the School Council within 14 days from the publication of the evaluation result.

PHD STUDENTS ABSENCES

In the case of an absence at classes the PhD student is required to present a medical certificate for the sick leave or a written explanation of the cause for this absence to the lecturer.

SUSPENSION OF EDUCATION

The realisation of the education programme by the PhD student is suspended for the period corresponding to the duration of:

- a maternal leave;
- a leave equivalent to maternal leave;
- a paternal leave;
- a parental leave;

specified in the Act  of 26 June 1974 - the Labour Code (the unified text in the Journal of Laws Dziennik Ustaw of 2019 item 1040 with later amendments).

The execution of the education programme may be suspended particularly in justified situations such as:

- temporal inability of the PhD student to undertake education due to illness, 
- personal care provided by the PhD student for a diseased family member, 
- he PhD student providing personal care for a child less than 4 years old or a child  with a medical disability certificate, 
- the PhD student having a medical disability certificate;

Such a suspension, as specified in points 1 and 2, is granted based on a written and documented request by the PhD student submitted to the Director.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Issues concerning the period, for which a PhD scholarship is granted as well as its minimum amount, are regulated by the Act.

Each PhD student without a doctoral degree receives a doctoral scholarship. The current rates at PULS for PhD students admitted within the limit of admissions are PLN 3,194.64 net per month until obtaining a positive mid-term evaluation and  PLN 4,082.04 net per month after obtaining a positive mid-term evaluation. 

The total period of receiving a doctoral scholarship may not exceed 4 years. The period of suspension and the period of education at the doctoral school are not included in this period.

A PhD student with a certificate of disability, a certificate of the degree of disability or a certificate of professional and social rehabilitation and employment of people with disabilities, receives a doctoral scholarship in the amount increased by 30%.

The amount of the PhD scholarship may be increased in the case of outstanding accomplishments of the PhD student. The decision in this respect is made by the Rector at the motion of the Director evaluated by the Committee of the respective discipline.

PhD students may apply for the Minister's scholarship for outstanding young researchers granted to PhD students by the minister for higher education and science in accordance with the rules specified in the Act. Such an application by the PhD student should receive a positive opinion by the scientific council of the respective discipline.

PhD students may be granted scholarships by local government units in accordance with the rules specified in the Act.

PhD students may be granted scientific scholarships by physical or legal persons not being state or local government entities in accordance with the rules specified in the Act.

SELF-GOVERNMENT OF PHD STUDENTS

Until 31 December 2023, the University's Self-government of PhD students consists of PhD students of the Doctoral School and the PULS PhD Studies.

PhD students appoint the representatives of the Self-government of PhD students on the terms set out in separate regulations of the PULS Self-government of PhD students.

Representatives of the Self-government of PhD students participate in meetings of the respective scientific councils of disciplines, the Senate and the School Council, on the terms set out in the University Statute and the Doctoral School Regulations, respectively.
