The Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture refers in its traditions to the Higher School in Żabikowo near Poznań, established 1870 - 1876, where Horticulture was one of the taught courses. The Faculty has been operating as an independent unit since 31 August, 1956.
The Faculty staff consists of 163 employees, including 105 academic teachers, who give classes and lectures for about 1 500 students of regular and extramural studies within 2 fields of study:
- Horticulture,
- Landscape Architecture.
Our Research concern novel cultivation technologies of horticultural crops and problems connected with environment protection and management. Basic scientific and research problems include e.g.:
- Ecologically-friendly and energy-saving methods of plant and mushroom cultivation, as well as the introduction of new plant species and cultivars to horticultural production,
- Diagnostics of nutrient requirements of horticultural plants
- Measurement of metabolic activity of plants, disorders caused by unfavourable environmental conditions and plant diseases,
- Epidemiology and diagnostics of plant diseases and biological plant protection,
- Assessment of soil contamination with heavy metals and phytotoxic substances,
- Prevention of negative effects of replantation diseases in fruit growing,
- Ecology and faunal studies of insects and the preservation of their biodiversity in natural and anthropogenic ecosystems,
- Restoration and management of urban green areas and green areas in open landscape,
- Analysis of changes in vegetation cover under the influence of industrial emissions and impact of mining industry
- Nature monographs, preservation plans and nature resource documentation of districts, lands, regions, forest divisions, promotional forest complexes, national and landscape parks, and nature reserves,
- Assessment of resources and threat to wild medicinal plants and plants covered by full or partial species protection,
- Space planning for recreation in areas covered by nature preservation regulations,
- Hydromorphological survey and evaluation of watercourses and the analysis of contamination levels of water bodies in urban parks.
Regular M.Sc. studies are also offered in the English language within the specializations of Plant breeding and seed production. The Faculty conducts Post-graduate Studies in Landscape Architecture and Post-graduate Studies in the Production of Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms. It also carries on Doctoral studies in the fields of: Biology in horticulture; Biological and agrotechnical aspects of horticulture; Environment and landscape protection and management.
Staff education is closely related to research conducted at the Faculty, concerning novel cultivation technologies of horticultural crops and problems connected with environment protection and management.
