FOR SUPERVISORS

CRITERIA FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF SUPERVISORS

  • The function of a dissertation supervisor for a PhD student may be served by a holder of a scientific title of Professor or a degree of Assistant Professor [doktor habilitowany] in the respective or related field of science, and meeting the requirement of the Scientific Council of the respective discipline.
  • The function of a dissertation supervisor may also be served by an employee of a foreign university or research institution, who does not meet the requirements specified in point 2, if the Committee of the respective discipline decides that the person has considerable accomplishments  concerning scientific problems in the field discussed in the doctoral dissertation.
  • The function of an auxiliary supervisor, who plays an important auxiliary supervisory function in relation to the PhD student, particularly in the process of research planning, execution and analysis of results, may be served by a holder of a minimum PhD degree in the respective or related discipline. The auxiliary supervisor needs to supplement the scope of competences of the dissertation supervisor with his/her own, unique scientific competences.
  • The function of a dissertation supervisor may not be served by a person, who within the last 5 years:
  1. has been a dissertation supervisor for four PhD students, who were discontinued due to the negative mid-term evaluation,
  2. has supervised preparation of a PhD dissertation by at least two PhD candidates, who did not receive positive reviews of their prepared PhD dissertations.

SUPERVISORS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervisor:

  • provides scientific supervision over a PhD student when it comes to preparation of a doctoral dissertation,
  • provides funding for research and best possible conditions for the preparation of a doctoral dissertation,
  • supports the PhD student in independent research and teaching,
  • organizes and supports the PhD student substantively and methodically in the implementation of teaching practice.
  • supports the PhD student in developing an individual research plan and the schedule contained therein,
  • assesses the progress in the doctoral student's research and teaching in the semester report which is submitted by the PhD student to the School Director,
  • gives opinions on the documents presented by the PhD student,
  • informs the School Director about important matters related to the implementation of the doctoral dissertation, including those affecting the date of its submission,
  • participates in the mid-term evaluation by answering questions asked by the Commitee regarding the implementation of the individual research plan,
  • checks and signs the report on the doctoral dissertation of the PhD student generated by the Unified Anti-plagiarism System,
  • participates in the defense of the PhD student's dissertation,
  • is subject to evaluation in terms of the quality of research care and support in conducting research activities.

 

Auxiliary supervisor:

  • should expand the supervisor's scope of competences with his own, unique scientific competences,
  • cooperates with the supervisor in the preparation of a doctoral dissertation,
  • supports the PhD student in the process of research planning, implementation and analysis of results,
  • gives opinions on the individual research plan of the PhD student.

MID-TERM EVALUATION

Realization of the individual research program is subject to mid-term evaluation taking place in the middle of the study period specified in the study program.

The date of the mid-term evaluation and the mid-term evaluation committee members, including the chairman, are appointed by the respective Committee of the Scientific Discipline.

The committee for the mid-term evaluation is composed of 3 members, of which minimum 1 member is a holder of the post-doctoral degree of [doktor habilitowany, comparable to DSc or Assistant Professor] or full professor in the discipline, in which the doctoral dissertation is being prepared, employed outside the entity running the School. The dissertation supervisor and the auxiliary supervisor may not be the committee members.

Not later than 30 days prior to the date of the mid-term evaluation PhD students present to the Committee of the respective discipline a report on the execution of the individual research program approved by their scientific supervisor or supervisors, including:

  • information on the progress in the execution of research tasks related to the PhD dissertation,
  • information on the fulfillment of the schedule of tasks presented in the individual research program.    
  • next this report is submitted to the mid-term evaluation committee. 

 

The template and format of this report are specified by the School Council.

The Committee conducting the mid-term evaluation confers with the PhD students, as well as the dissertation supervisor or dissertation supervisors on the report specified in point 6. The above-mentioned Committee decides on the mid-term evaluation, which is completed with the positive or negative note based on a majority vote. The result of the evaluation together with its justification is public.

The PhD student has the right to file an objection to a negative mid-term evaluation by appealing to the School Council within 14 days from the publication of the evaluation result.

PRELUDIUM BIS

The National Science Centre (NCN) annually announces the PRELUDIUM BIS competition, which is addressed to potential supewrvisors who want to raise funds to support PhD students' education in doctoral schools and to finance research projects carried out by PhD students as part of their doctoral dissertations.

The competition also supports the international mobility of PhD students who are required to complete a 3 to 6-month foreign research internship financed by the National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA).
